Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony Commercial Design
AWARD WINNER - Commercial Interior Public and Retail Maestro Award, Resene Total Colour Awards, 2018
The penguin colony is Oamaru’s largest tourist attraction with over 80,000 visitors a year.
Due to space constraints and the general requirement to offer more a centre development was proposed to include a day time tour facility that would complement day and night time viewing.
We were engaged initially to come up with a new spatial layout that would maximise current footprint and an extension. A new reception area and retail space was proposed as the entrance to the facility.
The new day tour we developed included a faux nest box entrance where visitors would enter a darkened tunnel to the surround sound of penguin noises and lightboxes before moving into a theatre room. An introductory video was shot to give visitors an overview of the colony before moving into display areas including interactive lightboxes, information panels, research overviews and statistics.
An activity room included faux penguin underpass tunnel for children to interact with and move into a play zone, colouring and puzzle areas and a bespoke wave table filled with beach items the penguins interact with. The day tour facility has provided a more interactive and informative experience for those visiting the colony.
